Want an easy and tasty breakfast that whips up quick? These Chocolate Donuts are ready in under 20 minutes, glazed to perfection and are absolutely delicious.
Donuts are my jam. I’m in love with any and all types of donuts. I have been making them for years and have always preferred baked donuts over fried.
They are simpler to make, use readily available ingredients and you don’t have to wait for anything to rise, or any hot oil to deep fry.
The faster and easier a recipe is the more I’m drawn to it and these Glazed Chocolate Donuts are exactly that. Easy and tasty.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients make this recipe whip up fast.
- Everything is made in one bowl making clean up easy.
- You can glaze these or not, but we highly recommend the glaze as it adds a lot of flavor.
I used to make donuts for my husbands co-workers when he was working outside the home and they always asked for more so we have made SO MANY different kinds over the years.
These Chocolate Donuts are one of my favorite basic recipes that we make often. Our kids enjoy them and they have just the right amount of chocolate to them.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE DONUTS, STEP BY STEP:
- In medium bowl add flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt and sugar.
- Whisk together until everything is combined.
- Add in eggs, sour cream, milk, butter and vanilla extract.
- Stir until everything is combined and no streaks of flour remain.
- Place into piping bag and pipe into a donut pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray and bake at 400 degrees F for 10 minutes, remove and let cool on wire rack.
- Meanwhile make your glaze by adding powdered sugar, milk and vanilla to a bowl.
- Whisk together until everything is smooth.
- Dip the tops of your donuts into the glaze mixture to cover.
- Flip your donuts over and dip the bottoms as well, make sure the whole donut is covered, place back on wire rack to harden.
How much easier can this Chocolate Donut Recipe get? Am I wrong? They seriously are super easy to whip up and even easier to chow down on.
In all honesty, they don’t even last an hour after they come out of the oven in our house, which is fine…less tempting or me to have a late night snack.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A DONUT PAN?
Donut pans are pretty inexpensive and are a fun kitchen item to have on hand if you are a donut fan, but what if you don’t own one?
If you don’t feel the need to purchase a pan here are some options:
- Muffin tin: Roll up foil into a log shape that is taller than your muffin wells and about 1″-1 1/2″ in diameter and place it in the center of the well. While it doesn’t quite give you the right shape, it will still give you your donuts.
- Free form: Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and line with parchment paper then pipe your donut batter into circles about 2″ apart on the tray and bake in oven.
- Holes: You can also always make donut holes with this recipe as well. Using a mini muffin tin, just fill the wells with batter and bake, checking for doneness after about 5-7 minutes.
HOW TO KEEP DONUTS FRESH:
Donuts are one of those baking recipe that are best eaten the same day that they are made, but there are some work arounds if you cannot do that.
If you have some donuts leftover the best option that we have tried is wrap them in a napkin and place them in a paper bag overnight.
You could also store them in an airtight container like a Tupperware container or ziptop bag as well.
Now if you don’t want a plain powdered sugar glaze there are so many different options out there that you could do as well.
If you really want a chocolate experience then use this glaze, then you will have chocolate on chocolate for sure.
While we like to stick with the traditional glaze recipe, this is not something that is essential, but it really adds to the flavor itself.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- This recipe can be easily halved or doubled, we have made for large ground and just my husband and myself.
- Cool the donuts as long as you can before glazing, if they are still warm when glazed the glaze will melt off and not harden.
- Our trick to get the donut batter into the wells is use a piping bag and place your batter in there, snip the tip off and pipe into wells.
- If you LOVE chocolate then add mini chocolate chips to this recipe, it is super good, also you can use the glaze referenced above.
If you want a quick and tasty breakfast recipe then you need to make these Chocolate Donuts ASAP. They are simple and addicting and you will fall in love.

What if you don’t have a donut pan?
If you read up in the post it gives you options on if you don’t have a donut pan.
If I want vanilla cake would I just sub flour for the cocoa?
Yes, just sub flour.
made these on weekend! great recipe!
Made these last night – didn’t have a donut pan, so just baked them in a muffin tin. I didn’t even make holes, but they came out really good!!! Thanks 🙂
These were quick and delicious as promised! Will make again.
Just made these today…..so easy and delicious……won’t last long!!!
My 10 year old great granddaughter made these for our breakfast and they were delicious.
These are so good! I love the glaze so much. This will be a staple for breakfast!
Hi! What does the sour cream do? I want to vegan-ize this and wondering if vegan sour cream would be worth it! Thank you so much 🙂
I loved the recipe.
Chocolate donuts are very good, it’s my favorite flavor! The recipe seems to be easy to make, I’ll try it at home. Thank you and I loved your site.
I was skeptical at first (because of the way the ingredients are whisking together). But seriously they are DELICIOUS !!! I’ll keep the recipe. Thank you soooo much 🙂
Can the sour cream be replaced by something else ?
You could use plain greek yogurt.
These are the best donuts I’ve ever had. They’re not too sweet so they’re perfect for adults. I think I’ve made them 5 or 6 times now and my family is obsessed.
These donuts are fantastic. I have tried a couple other recipes and they don’t compare. Plan on making other flavors.
i made these on friday and my kids loved them! We only had 2 left.
My only question is the batter was crazy thick and hard to get into the donut pans.. i dont have any stuff for piping it in… How would you make it thinner so it is easier to pour?? i had to spread it out and it was really sticky… They were really good tho!
Unfortunately usually baked donut batter is thicker, you can use a ziplock bag to pipe them in there or just add a few more Tbs of milk, it should change the recipe much.
Made these tonight for dessert (for two). Halved the recipe and almost ended up with 24 mini donuts! ( Good thing I halved the recipe!!! ) I’ve eaten so many already! They’re more cakey than the sour cream donuts you’d get @ a donut place. Will try them again with bisquick instead of flour just to see… I like more of a dense donut but still deelish! Thanks!
Made these with my daughter yesterday. 10 mins burned the bottoms just a little bit, but otherwise they turned out great. I put them in Tupperware overnight and they became very wet and sticky. They still tasted good, they were just messy to handle.
I made these with my son and split the batter in half to make half chocolate and half strawberry (strawberry nesquick lol!). Both halves turned out great and my son thought it was so fun.
These were perfect! The best chocolate donut recipe I’ve used so far. Will definitely be making these again.
What is sour cream what to add if we don’t have sour cream?
