A quick and easy drink with the flavors of grapefruit and gin this Salty Dog Cocktail is a classic fruity drink that takes minutes and minimal ingredients to put together.

Everyone loves a good cocktail recipe, have you ever tried a Salty Dog Cocktail? This was a drink that my mom used to drink all the time back in the day, she told me it was one of her signature cocktails.

I love to make a variety of drink recipes to share with you to break up all the baking and I love the fruity tasting ones like this cocktail, especially if you are a lover of grapefruit!

It’s a little tart with a kick from the gin, but an absolutely perfect drink for spring and summer or really whenever that craving calls. I don’t think that cocktails need a season you know?

This recipe literally has minimal ingredients and if you keep a well stocked bar then you most likely have everything you need on hand! We usually try to keep ours well stocked for company.

Everyone has their own favorite flavors and being able to mix up a good drink like this Salty Dog Cocktail is something that I really like to do when we have guests or throw parties.

Some of my other favorite drinks we have on our site include: Pomegranate Orange Prosecco Cocktail, Frozen Caipirinha and Raspberry Moscow Mules.

    WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:

    • Minimal ingredients need to be used.
    • You can use your favorite gin.
    • This recipe can be doubled or tripled depending on how many you’re serving.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):

    Margarita salt or kosher salt
    Ice
    Gin
    Grapefruit juice
    Grapefruit slices for garnish, optional

Ingredients needed to make a Salty Dog Cocktail.

HOW TO MAKE A SALTY DOG COCKTAIL, STEP BY STEP:

    1. Place salt on a plate a little larger than your glass.
    2. Take a piece of grapefruit and run it along the rim of the glass.
    3. Dip the rim into the salt.
    4. Add ice to the glass.
    5. Pour in gin followed by grapefruit juice.
    6. Stir gently to combine. Garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Step by step photos on how to make a Salty Dog Cocktail.

WHAT KIND OF GIN IS BEST?

We like to use Tanqueray for this recipe, it is a London Dry Gin and is our go-to. Some other brands that you can use include: Bombay Sapphire, Hayman’s, Beefeater London and Sipsmith.

You will most likely find Tanqueray the best for your buck and the most common, that is a reason why we use that one the most.

WHAT SALT IS BEST FOR THE RIM?

A coarse grain of salt is best to use for drinks like this such as kosher or margarita salt. Fine grain is way too salty to use.

If you are not a fan of salted rims you can rim the glass in sugar as well!

    CAN I USE ANOTHER LIQUOR?

Yes, these are known to use two types of liquor depending on what you like but if you are not a gin fan you can substitute it with vodka. Just use your favorite kind and same amount.

    HOW TO STORE:

We do not recommend storing this Salty Dog Cocktail, they should be made when. you are ready to drink them.

    TIPS AND TRICKS:

    • Easily double or triple this recipe depending on how many people you are serving.
    • Make sure to use a pulp free grapefruit juice.
    • Try to use a London Dry Gin.
    • You can also use vodka in its place.
    • Salt the rim with margarita salt or kosher salt only, or use sugar if you are not a salt person.
